Addiction is a chronic, recurring brain disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. It is a brain disease because drugs change the brain; they change its structure and how it works.

An unnecessary or misuse of a chemical (organic or inorganic). A continued use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or misuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs with negative consequences: hang-over, illness, problems at work, school, home, interpersonal relationships, legal, or physical risks.
