Scenario for Role Play 6
Teacher role
Teri is a seven-eleven year old second-sixth grader who lives with his mother and grandmother in a rural community. He is small for his age and stays to himself. He seldom completes his work; instead, he spends most of his time gazing out the window. He seems to daydream most of the time. Subsequently, he never knows what is going on in the class. You have just given an assignment and notice that Teri is looking out the window. You approach him and see he has not started the assignment. You talk to Teri.

Student role - Teri
You are a seven-eleven year old second-sixth grader who lives with your mother and grandmother in a rural community. You are sitting in class looking out the window with a paper in front of you. You are not particularly interested in doing the paper or not. When you are at home you work with your mother and or grandmother. Work is something that you help mom and grandma with and they help you. You can’t imagine why anyone would want to do work by themselves. It’s much more fun to work together. The only thing you really do by yourself is play with your trucks.
Teacher - Suggestions
Suggestions to encourage change from self-limiting behaviors to mastery oriented behaviors. See Conversations to change behavior
and possible verbal interactions and interventions.
Short term
- Talk to the student and see if they understand the assignment.
- Use interest boosting.
- Use hurdle helping to get the student started.
- To punish the student for their behavior would not allow them the opportunity to accept their behavior or being taught an acceptable behavior.
- Engage the student in activities that ensure success and be quick to praise and encourage.
Long term
- Refer the student for a medical exam particularly a hearing and eye examination.
- Meet with the parent(s) to discuss the behavior. Does the behavior occur at home?
- Suggest student and parent(s) visit a counselor or psychiatrist for family counseling.
