Evaluating and Comparing Standards
Standards are continuously created. Each set, usually created by a committee, is created based on different concerns and issues that influence their decisions of what is included and the dimensions and categories they choose, the information to include, and how the information is organized. These decisions of what is included and omitted influences their description of literacy and more importantly the content and quality of what will be taught and learned by their students.
To evaluate the comprehensiveness of a set of standards, four common dimensions have been identified for inclusion in a comprehensive description of any discipline or subject. The omission of any of these dimensions will result in an insufficient set of standards that will not be comprehensive and attain literacy for the discipline or subject. The four dimensions include:
- Practices, processes, and skills on how to inquire in the subject,
- Attitude, values, and dispositions that assist better uses of the subject,
- Perspective or parameters of use for the subject and connections within and without the subject, and
- Content knowledge of the subject created by doing the subject.
A comprehensive discussion of these dimensions is included in the subtopic: Subject Knowledge Organization Their Common Categories or Dimensions! in the essay on Being a Teacher: What Outstanding Teachers Know and Do
