Tutorial iMovie (3.0)

Open iMovie:

-Click the iMovie icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen. OR double click the system hard drive. Click ÒApplications.Ó Then double click ÒiMovie.Ó

Import the clip:

-A movie clip can be imported to the computer either from the camera, as an e-mail from an attachment, or from the internet.  In this case the clip will be imported from the internet.  Find a movie located on a camera, computer, phone... or other electronic device. Where it is located and its name.

-In iMovie chose ÒImportÓ from the file menu.  Double click the name of the clip OR click on the name of the clip and click ÒOpen.Ó The ÒImport FilesÓ window will appear and the amount of time left until the clip is imported will be displayed.  When the clip has finished importing, the picture of the first scene will display to the left and a thumbprint of the clip will appear at the right.

Undo:

-To undo any change made during this tutorial, choose ÒundoÓ from the Edit menu

Add the Clip to the Movie:

-Make sure that the film icon at the bottom left of the screen is highlighted in blue.  If not click on it.  This means iMovie is in the clip viewer.

-Click on the thumbnail of the clip at the upper right and hold down the mouse key. Drag the clip to the timeline, the area at the bottom of the screen that says, ÒDrag clips here to build your project.Ó Release the mouse button.

Trim the Clip:

-Click on the clip in the timeline. The movie window displays the first frame of the clip at the upper left of the screen.  Below the movie window there are two small white triangles. Click on the right arrow and hold down the mouse button. Drag the arrow to 3:10 on the timeline and release the mouse button.  This will highlight in yellow the portion of the movie that will be deleted.  Choose ÒClearÓ from the Edit menu or press delete on the keyboard

-Again click on the clip in the timeline. Click the right triangle and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the triangle all the way across the timeline to 19:22 and release the mouse button.  Then click on the left triangle and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the triangle to 16:28 and release the mouse button.  This will highlight in yellow the footage to be deleted at the end of the movie.  Choose ÒClearÓ from the Edit menu or press delete on the keyboard.

Save the project:

-After all that hard work, save the project by choosing ÒSave ProjectÓ from the file menu.  Type in a name for the project and click ÒSave.Ó

-Save the project periodically throughout this tutorial to ensure no changes are lost.

Split a Clip:

-Click on the Clip in the bottom timeline.  Then click on the Playhead below the movie viewer and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the Playhead to 9:12 and release the mouse button.

-From the Edit menu choose ÒSplit Video Clip at Playhead.Ó  This will split the existing clip into two clips in the timeline.

Give the Movie a Title:

-Click the ÒTitlesÓ tab.

-There will be a white box with names of title styles in it.  Click and drag the blue dot at the right of the box to scroll through the choices. Click ÒCentered Title.Ó 

-Click and drag the blue dot along the ÒSpeedÓ line to adjust the speed that the title will appear and disappear. Click and drag the blue dot in the ÒPauseÓ line to adjust the amount of time the title will be displayed.  Moving the dots to the right will increase the amount of time for both speed and pause.

-Click on the blue drop down arrows and then click on any desired font type.  To choose a color for the title, click on the box to the left of ÒColor.Ó  A window with a circle of color will appear to the left.  Click anywhere on the circle.  The selected color will be displayed in a rectangle above the circle.  When the desired color is found, click on the red circle in the upper left to close the color window. 

-iMovie is preset to have a clip be the titleÕs background. Click the box to the left of ÒOver blackÓ to put a checkmark in the box.  This will make the background of the title black.

-Click in the rectangular box below the font style, erase the current name of the movie if there is one, and type ÒCounting and One-to-One Correspondence.Ó  Then click on the next box down and type ÒByÓ and your name.

-Move the dot on the line with the small ÒAÓ on the left and the large ÒAÓ on the right to adjust the size of the title.  Moving the dot to the right will increase the size.

-To view what the title will look like, click ÒPreviewÓ

-To add the title, click the ÒTÓ to the left of ÒCentered TitleÓ and hold down the mouse button.  Drag ÒCentered TitleÓ down to the timeline and in front of the clips that are there. The clips in the timeline will automatically move to the right. Release the mouse button.  This will place a new clip with the title before the other clips.

Add More Titles:

-Click the ÒTitlesÓ tab.  Click ÒCentered TileÓ if it is not already highlighted.  Click on the blue dot on the ÒSpeedÓ line and hold down the mouse button.  Drag it all the way to the right.  Release the mouse button.  Click on the blue dot on the ÒPauseÓ line and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the dot all the way to the left and release the mouse button. 

-Adjust the font, color, and size as desired using the previous directions.  Make sure there is a checkmark in the box to the left of ÒOver Black.Ó  If not click in the box to add a checkmark.

-Click in the first rectangular box and type ÒOne-to-One Correspondence Breaks Down.Ó  Clear out the typing in the second rectangular box. Click on the ÒTÓ to the left of ÒCentered TileÓ and hold down the mouse button.  Drag this title style between the two video clips of the child counting. The right clip will automatically move more to the right.  After it does, release the mouse button. 

-In the top white rectangular box delete "One-to-One correspondence Breaks Down" and type "The End."

-Click on the ÒTÓ to the left of ÒCentered TileÓ and hold down the mouse button.  Drag this title to the end of the movie in the timeline and release the mouse button.

Creating a Chapter Marker:

-A chapter marker marks a certain important point in the movie.  This will save time.  Instead of fast forwarding or rewinding through a movie to find a specific part, a chapter marker can be clicked on to immediately go to that part of the movie. 

-Drag the blue Playhead above the timeline to the line indicating the beginning of the second title. Click the iDVD tab.  Then click ÒAdd Chapter.Ó iMovie gave the chapter the name ÒOne-to-One Correspondence Brea.Ó Press delete to delete this title and then type ÒOne-to-One BreakdownÓ and press enter. A yellow triangle will be displayed in the timeline at the bottom of the screen to indicate where the chapter marker was placed.

Recording an Audio Narration:

-Connect a microphone to the computer. OR if the computer has an internal microphone, make sure itÕs turned on.  Do this by clicking ÒSystem Preferences,Ó ÒSound,Ó ÒInternal Microphone.Ó

-In iMovie, click on the clock-like icon at the bottom left to switch to the timeline view.

-Click on the blue arrow above the timeline and hold down the mouse button. Drag it to to the line that signifies the start of the second title and release the mouse button. Then click the ÒAudioÓ tab.

-Click the red circular button to the right of ÒMicrophoneÓ to start recording. Speaking loudly enough that the volume bar moves into the yellow say, ÒOne-to-One correspondence breaks down.Ó

-Click the red circular button again to stop recording. The narration will be placed below the clips on the timeline and will play while the second title is being displayed.

-Click on the playhead above the timeline and hold down the mouse button. Drag it to the line that indicates the beginning of the last title and release the mouse button. Click the red circular button to the right of ÒMicrophoneÓ to start recording again. Speaking loudly enough that the volume bar moves into the yellow say, "This shows my understanding of child developement and its aplication to mathmatics with respect to..." and finish the statement. When finished, click the red circular button again to stop recording. This narration will be placed below the clips on the timeline and will play while the last title is being displayed.

Adjust the Volume of the Audio Clip:

-iMovie gave the audio clips a name such as ÒVoice 01.Ó Click on an audio clip to select it.  Click on the box to the left of ÒEdit VolumeÓ to put a checkmark in the box.

-Click on the blue dot on the line directly to the right and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the dot to the desired location for proper volume.  Moving the dot to the right will increase the sound of the audio clip. To preview the volume of the clip, click on the clip to select it.  Then click the play button under the movie viewer.

Playing Back Entire Project:

-Move the Playhead to the beginning of the movie.

-Click the ÒPlayÓ button below the movie viewer.
