Tutorial iMovie (4.0)

Open iMovie:

-Click the iMovie icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen. OR double click the system hard drive. Click ÒApplications.Ó Then double click ÒiMovie.Ó

-If asked click ÒNew ProjectÓ OR select ÒNew ProjectÓ from the File menu.

Import the clip:

-A movie clip can be imported to the computer either from the camera, as an e-mail from an attachment, or from the internet.  In this case the clip will be imported from the internet. Find a movie located on a camera, computer, phone... or other electronic device. Where it is located and its name.

-In iMovie chose ÒImportÓ from the File menu.  Double click the name of the clip OR click on the name of the clip and click ÒOpen.Ó The ÒImport FilesÓ window will appear and the amount of time left until the clip is imported will be displayed.  When the clip has finished importing, the picture of the first scene will display to the left and a thumbprint of the clip will appear at the right.

Undo:

-To undo any change made during this tutorial, choose ÒundoÓ from the Edit menu

Add the Clip to the Movie:

-Click on the icon at the bottom left that looks like a piece of film.  This icon is located directly to the left of the clock icon.  This will switch iMovie to clip viewer.

-Click on the thumbnail image of the clip at the upper right and hold down the mouse key. Drag the clip to the timeline, which is the area at the bottom of the screen that says, ÒDrag clips here to build your project.Ó Release the mouse button.

Trim the Clip:

-Click on the clip in the timeline. At the upper left, the movie window displays the first frame of the clip.  Below the movie window there is a blue line with a white arrow, or playhead. Click on the blue line.  Two small white triangles will appear below. Click on the right arrow and hold down the mouse button. Drag the arrow to 3:10 on the timeline and release the mouse button. This will highlight in yellow the portion of the movie that will be deleted.  Choose ÒClearÓ from the Edit menu or press delete on the keyboard

-Again click on the clip in the timeline. Click the right triangle and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the triangle all the way across the timeline to 19:20 and release the mouse button.  Then click on the left triangle and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the triangle to 16:28 and release the mouse button.  This will highlight in yellow the footage to be deleted at the end of the movie.  Choose ÒClearÓ from the Edit menu or press delete on the keyboard.

Save the project:

-After all that hard work, save the project by choosing ÒSave ProjectÓ from the file menu.

-Save the project periodically throughout this tutorial to ensure no changes are lost.

Add a Bookmark:

-A bookmark serves as a post it note of sorts. Click the clock icon at the bottom left of the screen.  This will switch iMovie to the timeline view.  Make sure that the playhead arrow above the timeline is all the way to the left.  If it is not, click on it and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the playhead to the left and release the mouse button. Click the play button to watch the movie. 

-At the point in the movie where The child looses one-to-one correspondence Press the ÒAppleÓ key and ÒBÓ to add a green bookmark to the timeline. This should be between 9:12 and 10:12 in the movie. 

Split a Clip:

-Drag the playhead above the timeline to the location of the bookmark.

-From the Edit menu choose ÒSplit Video Clip at Playhead.Ó  This will split the existing clip into two clips in the timeline.

Give the Movie a Title:

-Click the ÒTitlesÓ tab.

-There will be a white box with names of title styles in it.  Some names have gray arrows to the left of them.  Click the gray arrow to see more font names. To scroll through the title choices click and drag the blue dot at the right of the box up or down.

-Click the gray arrow to the left of ÒCenteredÓ and then click ÒCentered Title.Ó 

-As desired, click and drag the blue dot along the ÒSpeedÓ line to adjust the speed that the title will appear and disappear. Click and drag the blue dot in the ÒPauseÓ line to adjust the amount of time the title will be displayed.  Moving the dots to the right will increase the amount of time for both speed and pause.

-Click on the blue drop down arrows and then click on any desired font type.  To choose a color for the title, click on the box to the left of ÒColor.Ó  A window with a circle of color will appear to the left.  Click anywhere on the circle.  The selected color will be displayed in a rectangle above the circle.  When the desired color is found, click on the red circle in the upper left to close the color window. 

-Check to see if the box to the left of ÒOver blackÓ has a checkmark in the box. If it doesnÕt, click the box to add a checkmark. This will make the background of the title black.

-Click in the long rectangular box at the bottom and erase the current name of the movie if there is one. Type ÒCounting and One-to-One Correspondence.Ó  Then click on the next rectangular box and type ÒByÓ and your name.

-Move the dot on the line with the small ÒAÓ on the left and the large ÒAÓ on the right to adjust the size of the title.  Moving the dot to the right will increase the size.

-To view what the title will look like, click ÒPreviewÓ

-To add the title, click the ÒTÓ to the left of ÒCentered TitleÓ and hold down the mouse button.  Drag ÒCentered TitleÓ down to the timeline and in front of the first clip that is there. A green circle with a plus sign will appear and the clip in the timeline will automatically move to the right. Release the mouse button.  This will place a new clip with the title before the original clip.

Add more Titles to the movie:

-Move the playhead above the timeline so that it is positioned at the line dividing the two clips of the child counting. 

-Click the ÒTitlesÓ tab.  Click ÒCentered TileÓ if it is not already highlighted.  Click on the blue dot on the ÒSpeedÓ line and hold down the mouse button.  Drag it all the way to the right.  Release the mouse button.  Click on the blue dot on the ÒPauseÓ line and hold down the mouse button.  Drag the dot all the way to the left and release the mouse button. 

-Adjust the font, color, and size as desired using the previous directions.  Make sure there is a checkmark in the box to the left of ÒOver Black.Ó  If not click in the box to add a checkmark.

-Click in the first rectangular box and type ÒOne-to-One Correspondence Breaks Down.Ó Clear out the words in the next box down. Click on the ÒTÓ to the left of ÒCentered TileÓ and hold down the mouse button.  Drag this title style between the two video clips of the child counting. The right clip will automatically move more to the right.  After it does, release the mouse button.

-In the top white rectangular box delete "One-to-One correspondence Breaks Down" and type "The End."

-Click on the ÒTÓ to the left of ÒCentered TileÓ and hold down the mouse button.  Drag this title to the end of the movie in the timeline. When the green circle with the plus sign appears, release the mouse button.

Creating a Chapter Marker:

-A chapter marker marks a certain important point in the movie.  This will save time.  Instead of Fast forwarding or rewinding through a movie to find a specific part, a chapter marker can be clicked on to immediately go to that part of the movie. 

-Click on the playhead above the timeline and hold down the mouse button. Drag it to the line that indicates the beginning of the second title, "Breakdown of One-to-One Correspondence."

-Click the iDVD tab.  Then click ÒAdd Chapter.Ó iMovie gave the chapter a name. Press delete to delete this name. Then type ÒOne-to-One BreakdownÓ and press enter. A yellow triangle will be displayed in the timeline at the bottom of the screen to indicate where the chapter marker was placed.

Recording Audio Narrations:

-Connect a microphone to the computer. OR if the computer has an internal microphone, make sure itÕs turned on.  Do this by clicking ÒSystem Preferences,Ó ÒSound,Ó ÒInternal Microphone.Ó

-In iMovie click on the playhead above the timeline and hold down the mouse button. Drag the playhead to the line that indicates the beginning of the second title, "Breakdown of One-to-One Correspondence."

-Click the red circular button to the right of ÒMicrophoneÓ to start recording. Speaking loudly enough that the volume bar moves into the yellow say, ÒOne-to-one correspondence breaks down.Ó

-Click the red circular button again to stop recording. The narration will be placed below the clips on the timeline and will play while the second title is being displayed.

-Click on the playhead above the timeline and hold down the mouse button. Drag it to the line that indicates the beginning of the last title and release the mouse button. Click the red circular button to the right of ÒMicrophoneÓ to start recording again. Speaking loudly enough that the volume bar moves into the yellow say, "This shows my understanding of child developement and its aplication to mathmatics with respect to..." and finish the statement. When finished, click the red circular button again to stop recording. The narration will be placed below the clips on the timeline and will play while the third title is being displayed.

Playing Back Entire Project:

-Move the Playhead to the beginning of the movie.

-Click the ÒPlayÓ button below the movie viewer.
